Frequently Asked Questions about Service Dogs

WHAT CAN A SERVICE DOG DO FOR ME?

A Service Dog can and will improve your life. Dog owners live happier lives than people without dogs. Dog owners live approximately seven years longer than non-dog owners. Service dogs can provide a vital link to improve the health and confidence of a person with diabetes.

ARE SERVICE DOGS USEFUL TO ALL POTENTIAL OWNERS?

NO, they are not. Service Dogs require constant training and interaction with their owners to be effective. Very much like children these animals are happiest and most effective with constant involvement from their parent/owners. Service Dogs are never left at home. One wouldn’t leave your children home alone, would you? Service Dogs need to go to the movies, out to diner, on vacations and to work to be effective.

A potential owner must question the commitment required. Dogs are expensive and time consuming and require that your lifestyle allow them the freedom to exercise and to be by your side...always...every day.

WHAT KINDS OF SERVICE DOGS DO YOU TRAIN? HOW DO I DECIDE BETWEEN A MALE AND A FEMALE?

We train only English Labrador retrievers. We will provide a perfect fit for you with a Service Dog, most often a female.

HOW EXPENSIVE IS A SERVICE DOG?

We can work with you to make a service dog affordable. Please contact us for details. Monthly feeding and vitamins will cost $160.00. Emergency services from a veterinarian can add considerable expense at any time. Well puppy checks and vaccinations will add yearly expenses as well as grooming.

HOW CAN I AFFORD A SERVICE DOG?

Big Chief Service Dogs can tailor a payment schedule for you.

HOW DO I PICK-UP MY TRAINED DOG?

Big Chief Service Dogs will not allow dogs to be flown without a caretaker; you will need to arrange to pick-up the dog by car. A mandatory training seminar is required to acquaint all new owners with their Service Dogs. This seminar takes place when the pup is between 10 months and 12 months old and usually lasts 3 days.

Big Chief Service Dogs is located near Sun Valley in South-Central Idaho. Your mandatory training can also include fly fishing, rafting, golfing, skiing, ice skating, mountain biking and sightseeing. We have excellent accommodations locally, great restaurants and beautiful mountain scenery.
